Lagarde Law IN COVINGTON

Founded in 1813 by New Orleans merchant John Wharton Collins, Covington, Louisiana sits in the fork of the Bogue Falaya and Tchefuncte rivers. Originally named “Wharton” after Collins’ grandfather, the town was renamed in 1816 to honor General Leonard Covington, a hero of the War of 1812.

Collins designed the Covington downtown area with an innovative grid of “squares within squares”. The interior squares were used as community plots—or “ox lots”—where farmers and draymen could shelter their teams of oxen while doing business. Our Covington office is located in a picturesque building which now stands on one of these historic “ox lots” at 421 North Florida Street.

Today, downtown Covington is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a charming, arts-driven destination just 40 miles north of New Orleans. Featuring the beautifully restored 1907 boutique “Southern Hotel”, Covington is also home to a vibrant farmers market, art galleries, antique and specialty boutiques, and elevated dining experiences, all in walking distance.
